Intel demos Wireless Energy

Many readers are sending in coverage of a demo at Intel's developer forum of a wirelessly powered 60-watt bulb. The NYTimes gives background on Intel's improvement to the 'wireless resonant energy link' technology pioneered at MIT, where researchers achieved 50% efficiency of power transmitted several meters via magnetic fields. Intel reached 75% efficiency. Now they just have to make those coils a lot smaller.

Magnetic induction have been used before, but Intel managed to use 75% of the original consumed power, which is not good, but fairly good for the upcoming steps.

Everyone Really Is Just Six Degrees From Kevin Bacon, Microsoft Says

A study of Microsoft's instant messaging network supports the popular idea that everyone on the planet can be connected through fewer than seven links in a chain of contacts.

The study's findings have some remarkable implications. For instance, Bill Gates is only 6 or 7 degrees away from free software advocate and Microsoft critic Richard Stallman, and John McCain -- though miles apart in age and political beliefs -- is no more than just a handful of social connections away from his presidential rival, Barack Obama.
